Washington D.C. License Plate Renewal

What Is License Plate Renewal in Washington, D.C.?

License plate renewal in the district keeps the existing registration active without changing the plate number or physical tags. DC DMV issues an updated registration card and, where applicable, an updated expiration sticker. The license plate itself remains on the vehicle.

  • Cycle: Registration is renewed annually. The fee schedule contains annual rates for each weight class.
  • Renewal is not a transfer of ownership. A change of owner requires a separate title application at the DC DMV service center before new license plates can be issued.
  • Commercial vehicles are renewed on the same annual cycle but at higher weight class rates. Motorcycles and motorized cycles also follow the annual pattern.
  • Battery electric vehicles registered in class V ($40 for the first two years) revert to the standard weight class on the third renewal, according to D.C. Code § 50-1501.03.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Washington, D.C. License Plate?

DC DMV sends renewal notices by mail or email 60 calendar days before the registration expiration. This 60-day period is the earliest you can renew.

  • Expiration trigger: Registration expires at midnight on the last day of the specified period. The mailed notice and sticker date both mark this deadline.
  • There is no formal grace period. A $100 penalty applies if registration is not renewed by the expiration date unless the owner surrenders the tags on or before this date. This fee is governed by D.C. Code § 50-1501.03(l).
  • Inspection gate: A valid emissions inspection must be on file before DC DMV processes any renewal. Private passenger vehicles are inspected every two years; commercial vehicles are inspected annually. Motorcycles are entirely exempt from inspection.
  • Registrations expired for more than 90 days lose eligibility for online renewal and require an in-person visit. DC DMV may issue a one-time 5-day temporary registration for vehicles with expired inspection and expired registration stickers.

How To Renew Your License Plate in Washington, D.C.

Before choosing a channel, confirm three things: current DC vehicle insurance on file, a valid emissions inspection sticker, and all outstanding debts to the district (fines, child support, unpaid checks).

  • Online: Only for passenger class vehicles. Log in to online.dmv.dc.gov with your tag number and the last four characters of the VIN. Print a 45-day temporary registration to display on the dashboard while DC DMV mails the permanent card within 7-15 business days.
  • By mail: Send payment (check or money order payable to DC Treasurer) with your tag number, DC DMV ID number, and payment purpose to DC DMV, ATTN: Processing Center, PO Box 90120, Washington, DC 20090. Allow extra time for mail processing.
  • In person: Visit any DC DMV service center. Present the renewal notice (or tag number), confirm identity, pay the renewal fee, and leave with an updated registration card and sticker. DC DMV accepts cash, checks, money orders, credit/debit cards, and contactless payments.
  • Address or name changes must be completed before renewal. Fees in the next section apply regardless of the channel you choose.

The base registration fee is predictable; the $30 per year registration card fee added on top is the item most renewal calculators miss.

  • Passenger Class I (3,499 pounds or less) renews for $70 per year. Class II (3,500 to 4,999 pounds) costs $175, Class III (5,000 to 5,999 pounds) costs $300, and Class IV (6,000 pounds or more) costs $550 plus $75 for each 1,000 pounds over 10,000.

  • Each renewal includes a $30 registration card fee in addition to the weight class rate.
  • Inspection fee: $35 for the two-year emissions inspection cycle, charged at registration rather than at the inspection station. New vehicles pay $10 for a four-year sticker instead.
  • Late renewal triggers a $100 reinstatement fee according to D.C. Code § 50-1501.03(l). An expired insurance policy adds $150 per day for the first 30 days, then $7 per day up to $2,500.
  • Additional fees for special license plates (typically $25 for application plus $20 for annual display fee) renew alongside the base registration. A 2.5% service fee applies to all credit and debit card transactions.

Can I Renew My License Plate Online in Washington, D.C.?

Online renewal covers only passenger class vehicles. Commercial, trailers, motorcycles, and hire registrations must be renewed in person at a DC DMV service center. The online portal at online.dmv.dc.gov accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover (2.5% service fee). A printed 45-day temporary registration serves as proof of renewal until the permanent card arrives by mail within 7-15 business days.

Online renewal requires registration expired no more than 90 days, valid inspection, valid DC DMV ID, and valid DC vehicle insurance. Any outstanding debts to the district (parking fines, unpaid checks, child support) block the transaction until resolved in person.

For mail renewal, send to DC DMV, ATTN: Processing Center, PO Box 90120, Washington, DC 20090 with:

  • DC vehicle tag number and ID number.
  • Check or money order payable to DC Treasurer for the full renewal amount.

If the DC DMV portal can process your renewal, use it; service centers are intended for cases the portal cannot handle.
